Become A Millionaire While You Sleep! My Kind Of Work!

In a moment of insanity, when my brain must have escaped for Guadalajara, I replied to an email that asked if I was interested in a home based business opportunity. Since then my mailbox has been stuffed with postcards, brochures and letters inviting me to become rich almost overnight.
Every day, another two or three "offers" hit my mailbox assuring me that with absolutely no money and no effort, I can be certain of making thousands of dollars in my spare time. All this without ever leaving my easy chair or talking to anyone!
I'm a student of the "There's no such thing as a free lunch" school of thought, but some of the brochures and letters I've received lately, make joining one of these opportunities quite tempting.
Troubling economic times have made the idea of making extra money more appealing than it did a few years ago. Slick postcards and brochures chronicling someone's rocket ride to wealth, makes joining such a program very tempting. One of the cards I received told of a man who went from being stone broke one day to making $30,000 a weekend within three months. I decided not to send him $125.00 for a start-up kit.
One golden opportunity I received was an 18 page letter about how a gentleman had become a multimillionaire in a very short period of time and now he was going to help me do the same. I wouldn't even to spend long hours working, and there was nothing to sell. This is the kind of job I've needed for years!
I wonder how many millions I would have by now if I had known about this program. The cost of this wonderful opportunity is only $159.95 with a 30 day money back guarantee if I'm not satisfied. I can see where this company wouldn't worry about having to pay refunds; if I've made a million dollars in 30 days, it would be bad form to request a refund.
Some of the headlines I see on these advertisements are: "You Don't Need To Do Any Work!", "No Selling!", "No Phone Calling!", and "We'll Do All The Work For You!" My personal favorite and one that I'm sure is bringing in hundreds of new trainees a day, is my personal favorite, "Earn Millions While You Sleep"!
I have no doubt that there are folks who will make a lot of money at some, if not all, of the programs I receive in the mail. Sadly, that's a very small percentage of the people that join these money making opportunities. Knowing that the old 80/20 rule applies, 80% of the work is done by 20% of the people, I deduce that 80% of that 20% will fall by the wayside. Figure that one out!
This would leave only a small number of people with the determination, persistence and focus it takes to succeed. This is the way it is in any business! These are the ones who will succeed in most of the things they try.
I've received about 50 cards and letters; some big, some small. At least 25 telephone calls from people from various parts of the country wanted me to listen to their home business proposal, with each person saying his was the best. Most of them said the same thing with a little different hook from each one.
If I had been lonely and without a friend in the world, I would have enjoyed the attention I was getting. After a short time though, I began throwing away the mail without opening it and hanging up when someone asked if I was looking for a great business opportunity.
It really comes down to whether I want to spend my fishing lure money on a chancy situation or do I want to simply forget it all and head for the lake. I'll take the lake!

Top-level comments on this article: (6 total)Aw shucks, Bob! When I saw you were the author (after reading the title), I was hopeful! I knew you would give me the secret so I could retire now and sleep my way to my millionaire status. That noise? It's the wind knocked out of my sail; my parachute deflating; my dreams, hopes and aspirations exhaling. Bummer!
Thanks for nothing! *pout* But a fun read, Bob. I'll stick to what I'm doing. Don't forget to share if . . .
hi Mr. red, could you keep some of them for me? :)i knew you'd pick the lake, thanks for sharing,my best, sueHi Sue, sure I'll keep some for you. I'm too lazy to do anything but fish.My best,Bob
Bob,Yes, you really have to be careful with these rich-over-night-no-work-required schemes. Only those with a long-term vision, a thorough understanding of the field one is getting in to, planning, a support team of experts to fill in your knowledge and skill gaps (no one knows or can do everything), marketing, and research and work, work, work are the only tools to long-term success. Sure, you may be able to kick back but only after a lot of sweat. And sure you may be able to make a million bucks on a hot trend but once that trend is gone so is your money. Too many of the vulnerable and desperate get caught up in these schemes and buy into them sight unseen only to end up back where they were or worse.
I too have certainly been tempted, but one really has to know his / her strengths / weaknesses and get expert help to obtain long-term success. After years of research and going partially down many paths (doing my homework) have I finally found what works for me. But at the same time you can't over analyze or get into paralysis of analysis. It does take some guts and risk to become successful, but as the Trump says, you got to get to know your gut and then use it. "Don't be a financial wimp!" ;=) Ah, the Don has it under control.
Anyway, nice article. One many of those desperate to make big $ should read. God bless.
Jeff, I think you must have deluged by the get rich quick people too. By nature I'm a lazy man and I just know there has to be some work involved in any of the opportunities. Thanks for the commentBobOh yes, and I've opted out of many an email list but still get waaaaaayyyyyyy too many emails. But there's good news, I know a few rich lazy guys, so anythings possible. Take care.
Bob, great observations! Your article brings to mind all those ads I've seen about making money or losing weight "effortlessly." Invariably, though, there's always something you have to do. But if you have to do anything at all, it's not effortless.I also remember buying an "FM adapter" for a car I had in my twenties that only had an AM radio. The reason I bought that particlar adapter instead of any of the others is that it was stated on the box that no drilling was necessary. Well, much to my chagrin, when I got it home, opened the box, and pulled out the instructions, item one read, "Drill two holes ..."Terry, your no holes drill story, reminds me of an old line, "The world does owe you a living, but you have to work hard to get it."Bob
Good article... I agree--there's no such thing as something for nothing. I know that now... but I have to admit that I fell for many of those "scams" when I first started. If you want to make money with any business it will take hard work and persistence and there's just no way around that.
Great observations Bob. Yes, there is a lot of hype confusing those seeking legitimate opportunities with leaders of integrity. They are not hard to find. But you do have to sort through a lot of noise. Ultimately, we live in the greatest country in the world to realize our dreams and the possibility of making money while you sleep or while you're at the lake is only limited by you. Thanks for your article.
